Why do I need a Website?

    - by Tmot

Spoken to lot of business people about having a website and the most popular question asked is “Why do I need a website?” I always give them reasons why they need a website in which I will explain each of them shortly. We are Living in a digital world, a website is now a necessity for a business, big or small. If you have a business and don’t have a website, you are probably losing a number of great opportunities for your business. Before we proceed let get to know what a website is although I know majority of you might have known what a website is but let’s refresh our memories. A website in its bare form, a website is a single domain that consists of different web pages. Here are reasons why you need a website.
If in today’s age you don’t have a website there is a good portion of the market that will not even consider you as an option when they are looking to buy. Personally, if I am dealing with a supplier I am looking to purchase from and they don’t even have a website I pretty much write them off as an option to buy from and my view of that company is diminished to that it is a company that is very poorly managed. With this viewpoint why would I want to purchase from a company like this? Based on my experience most people think similar to myself. There are some people that do not hold this same thought but I would guess that probably 80% of people have bad opinions of companies that don’t have websites.
Increasing visibility is one major factor that makes having a website important. Even if people have heard about your company, they may want to carry out research online first, before leaving the house. Provide a map and directions to your company’s shops or offices on your website so that visitors are less likely to have trouble finding the place.
Social networks add-and-remove features all the time. They change designs, and make seemingly absurd changes in order to get more advertising dollars. All this can hurt your web presence and alienate fans. With your own website: you call the shots. You make the changes. You decide on the design.
There are many different e-commerce gateways nowadays to sell your products directly online. So, if you have a good website design, which creates trust in people, the customers might be ready to swipe their credit cards on your online store as well. Online e-commerce comes with its own challenges because you need to maintain inventory and you need to manage transport. However, looking at the phenomenal growth of e-commerce websites, we can be rest assured that small websites with unique products will grow equally well. Having a website is important for business because sometime down the line, the customer will expect 100% of businesses to have an online sales presence. And if you are 24/7 collecting offers, then you can drive fantastic revenue for your business.
If your website was built correctly, then your site is mobile-responsive. You might be wondering why this is one of the reasons that makes a website the most important marketing tool. Well, as more and more users browse the web on smartphones (more than desktop usage now, according to Google), it is important not to miss out on opportunities for new leads by not having a responsive website. Even better, a fully optimized mobile-responsive website will be rewarded by Google, and thus, your website will rank higher in searches engines. (The converse is true too: Google has announced that they will penalize sites that do not meet their AMP standards.) Higher ranking, of course, means higher visibility for your website and more opportunities for growth. Mobile-responsive is important for email marketing, too. If you use email marketing as part of your inbound marketing to create connections with your customers, then your ultimate goal is to make them want them to click on your links. 74% of smartphone owners use their devices to check their email, and mobile now makes up the majority of email opens at 51%. However, if your website isn’t responsive, those clicks won’t lead to any conversions, and you’ll leave your potential customers with a bad taste in their mouth.
As a small business owner, especially one that is just starting out, you’re probably thinking you can’t afford a professional website. But you really can’t afford NOT to. Although the cost of designing a website varies depending on your needs and your skill level, once it’s up and running, a professional website is worth the initial investment, especially if built using WordPress, which enables you to add and change your own content regularly, saving you money in updates. Compared with the cost of traditional means of advertising, such as newspaper ads, radio commercials, promotional materials and even networking events that often include the cost of a meal or trade tables, when you consider the potential market you can reach with a website, it is a very cost-effective way to promote your business long term. Even if your skill levels are slim to none and you need to continually pay your website designer/developer to maintain and update your website for you, the upkeep costs are still lower than ongoing traditional marketing, and the investment is certainly worth the number of potential customers that will find your business online each year. When it comes to comparing the cost of a professional website with a freebie D.I.Y. website, unless you are fairly skilled, your website will cost you in time and effort that could be better spent elsewhere in your business. Not only that, but if it’s not professional, or can’t be found in a Google search, you will lose customers and that will also cost you dearly. Saving money is definitely a great reason why your business needs a professional website, but there are several more reasons.
Websites are accessible from anywhere in the world provided there is an internet connection. Since more and more people have access to the internet, even in remote locations, you can target a much wider audience if your business has a website. Whether you offer products or services, or you’re business or consumer based, your website provides you with an alternative location to sell. As a retailer, an eCommerce website is a great place to sell your products to a wider market. Think of all the people who can’t get to your bricks and mortar store that you could sell your products to. Even service-based businesses can offer their services globally through a website. Now that we have so many affordable ways to communicate with people, we can do business with anyone, anywhere, any time. A website makes it so much easier to attract clients from a global market.
In all this time, I never mentioned competition. However, having a website is important to beat competition as well. Through modern seo tactics like content creation, link building or social media marketing, you can stay on top of competition and attract more customers to your business. Off course seo has its own cost. Without a good seo, your site may fail badly. But with good seo, the investment or expenses done on seo, will give a very good roi. I had one of my clients who has a top positioning for the keyword water cooler. That top positioning has driven him a turnover of at least 10 lac rupees. So using seo to come on top of search engines, and then attracting and retaining customers can all be done through use of an amazing website.
If nothing else convinces you about the importance of websites, then this single point will. A customer needs convenience. The more convenient a purchase for him, the more likely he us to buy repeatedly. Your website is convenient for him to visit. Contact form is convenient for him to ask questions. E-commerce setup is convenient for him for purchases. And finally, your website being present in top of search engines will be convenient for him to find his favourite vendor.
Unlike you bricks-and-mortar location, which is only open a few hours a day, a website is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can provide both regular and prospective customers the convenience of reviewing your products and services when your store or office is closed. Not only that, with so many interactive features and add-ons available, visitors to your website can contact you, sign up for your courses, schedule appointments and even purchase directly through your website even when you’re away from your desk or after closing. With today’s busy lifestyles, this is a great selling point when making a purchase decision. I have been able to compile 10 reasons why you actually need a website for your business and how it can help improve your business. I do hope its compelling and convincing enough to make you take the leap and improve your business. Smahile Hub is a Creative Agency passionate about building businesses and developing brands.
